"I understand art as the pursuit of something" -[constructed]
Yesterday, I and my roommates went to watch a performance going on in the theater at our school that was a senior thesis project called [constructed]. Basically, if I get this right, this idea of the performance is to bring forth how the essence of the woman (along with people in general) is constructed into labels and ideas that may not even fit with who we are as people. Now, don't worry, I'm not about to go on a feminist rant on how we are women need to be proud of ourselves, though I do think that is true. My purpose for writing this particular post is to bring awareness to the fact that each of us as individuals are not so easily "constructed" as we'd like to think. We're may not know what we want or where exactly we fit in. And we may even fit in many places.
This performance really wracked my brain. I left feeling so proud to be a woman, beautiful, and thankful for life. In this big world there are so many types of people and how can we even say that each person fits into a "type"? What does that even mean? There is so much beauty in the mystery of the person; of our minds and hearts.
Above is a quote that was taken from the performance: "I understand art as the pursuit of something." This means that if you are in pursuit of anything whether it be a friend, degree, sense of self or anything, that you are creating a form of art. Now, some may say that I am just being silly, but think about it. By pursuing something, we give a piece of ourself to that. We put effort and work into it and whether or not it comes out how we originally envisioned, the art that we create is within ourselves. And it brings us to a place of finding who we are.
Personally, I find that to be beautiful. And maybe it is the mystery of the art within ourselves that is so captivating to me. We are complex beings. We cannot understand why we pursue certain things and not others at all times and we certainly cannot understand the art we're creating within ourselves until we reflect and come upon it at points in time.
"As a culture, we are terrified of not understanding. We create boundaries and boxes to hold meaning and keep our perceptions in check. What would happen if we let those go; if we allowed our minds to wander in the mystery?" -Hannah Holman, Director
This quote sums up a lot of what I've been processing ever since this performance. This art we create is something that might cause us to wander and step out of our boundaries, but there's beauty in the mystery. We must face it and go forth into life without assuming anything of anyone and ready to learn about the art we each create.
