Now, if you have never heard of them or listened to their music, I would highly recommend it. They're a folk/ indie rock band from the UK. You can imagine my excitement on Wednesday when I was going to see them play in the very country they're from! The concert was in Glasgow, so that was a treat, too. Glasgow is much bigger than Edinburgh and just has a different feel, I think. People also say the shopping is better in Glasgow, but I couldn't tell you if that's true or not. Ha!
My dear friend, Paula, went along with me and truly helped me be able to see them in the first place. What a lovely, lovely girl. We enjoyed an evening of cheap McDonald's (everyone who knows me at home is probably gasping at this point because I hate McDonald's) and fantastic music.
The point here is not to tell you about some concert I went to, but to tell you about why it means so much to me. You see, Mumford and Sons has produced two albums that have helped me get through some extremely tough stuff, especially here. It was an incredibly spiritual experience for me and having someone there to share it with was awesome. Many of their songs have been my anthem in times of joy or trouble and being able to feel the base pump through my bones and along with my heartbeat was captivating and I left feeling spiritually fed and completely happy.
And yesterday, at church, there was the annual Manifesto event called Beer and Carols happening. Now, this event is only for men, but I was given the opportunity to help serve beer as well as set up and clean up. Not only was this event completely fantastic for the guys of the church and other guys who came along, but it was also a great way to get to know some more people. You see, I've really just started to make friends outside of work and my flatmates. It is SO much work meeting new people when you enter a completely new environment. So, P's and G's has been an incredible help with meeting and getting to know new friends. I love, love, love to meet new people and make friends, but it's nice having a place where it is much easier to do so because so many of the people there are so friendly and welcoming.
Beer and Carols goes something like this (my dad will be SO jealous of this):
The guys get 4 beers to taste. About a half pint each. There are also different cheeses that go with certain beers and in the middle of the event there is a hog roast. In between each beer the guys sing a round of carols and there are a couple other things as well. One that I found ti be quite entertaining was something called "A Christmas Sniff" Basically, there were 5 candle flavors and the guys had to come up, table by table, and guess which was which. I applaud whoever came up with this game because I have never seen men smell candles so intently. Loved it.
Needless to say, this past week has had it's fair share of challenges, but these two moments have helped make it through.
Paula and I :)
Look at how close we were!
